Since its foundation in 1989 it remains the only state- funded school with obligatory study of both ancient languages in Russia. The author discusses the aims and principles of the school and analyses its program of Greek and Latin in comparison to the Classical schools of modern Europe and in prerevolutionary Russia. At the Institute for Postclassical Studies at Belgorod State University, Prof. Elena Viktorovna Litovchenko and Prof. Nikolai Nikolaevich Bolgov are translating both Sidonius’ letters and his poetry (read the first letters on the Contributions page). The Institute publishes an annual journal, Cursor mundi, ‘scientific almanac devoted to the problems of historical anthropology’, which comes out in Ivanovo. For publications, including recent work by Eduard Manukyan from Ivanovo, see the Bibliography pages. Elena Litovchenko introduces her research as follows (as of 28 Dec. 2015): The sphere of my scientific interest is the mental continuity of Late Antiquity’s intellectuals. In 2007, I defended a thesis, ‘Classical Tradition in the Works of Late Roman Intellectuals’ (4th-6th cent.)’, devoted to the analysis of the dynamic model of “continuity-discontinuity” in Late Antiquity. In 2011, I published the monograph The Last Intellectuals of Late Antiquity: Tradition and Change. Sidonius Apollinaris was, and remains, a key personality of my investigation along with other Latin writers such as Paulinus of Nola, Salvianus, Paulinus of Pella, Ruricius of Limoges, Rutilius Namatianus, Dracontius. I particularly emphasize the pagan and Christian elements in their works. I focus on various questions concerning Sidonius: his daily life, his relatives, episcopal duties, literary activity, his attitude to the political situation in Gaul and in the Roman world, and his relations with barbarians. Since 2006, I’ve published about twenty papers devoted to Sidonius. There are some articles among them with translations of Sidonius’ letters into Russian (I.1; I.4; I.6; II.8; IV.5; IV.12; IV.24). The full list of my publications can be found here, though it’s mainly in Russian except two papers in English. My ambitious goal is to translate all books of Sidonius’ letters, because we have only about forty epistles translated into Russian by various historians during the 20th-21th centuries. This work is neither easy nor rapid but very important because we’d like to make Late Antique sources accessible to students and to people who are interested in ancient history. The research of Sidonius’ writings is one of the main directions of the Centre of Postclassical Studies of Belgorod University, where I’ve been working since 2004 (the head of the Centre is Prof. N. Bolgov). Translations A collection of Russian translations of Sidonius’ letters for download.

Hungarian Sidonius Scholarship

Contributed by Ágnes T. Horváth, February 2015 The historiography and present state of the research of Late Roman Empire and Sidonius Apollinaris in Hungary. In Hungary only a few researchers have treated the era of the late Roman Empire. At the Szeged University (formerly Attila József University of Science) the late Béla Czúth, started to deal with the late Roman Empire in the fourth and fifth centuries (the movement of the Bagaudes in Gaul). He used the letters of Sidonius as important historical sources in his studies published at the 1960-s and later in the 1980-s. He and his students translated the letters of Sidonius into Hungarian in their BA and MA theses.  These translations can be considered rough renderings of these texts suitable for historical interpretation, but not scholarly editions. The students of Béla Czúth became later teachers in secondary schools, so they could not pursue further research, and the death of Béla Czúth (1986) meant a setback as well. Only two scholars have made further research. The first is Ágnes T. Horváth, whose research field and interest remained the history of late Roman Empire and correspondence, with special emphasis on the letters of Sidonius. Her research started as a student with the letters of Sidonius (translated Epistolae VII.), published some studies concerning Sidonius. Having defended her PhD from the correspondence (including Sidonius) of the Roman Empire (University of Debrecen 1999), she published a volume in Hungarian (Three Centuries of Roman Correspondence. Szeged, 2002). She became (1989-2007) a College professor at the History Department of the Juhász Gyula Teacher,s Training College (later a faculty of the University of Szeged),  where she as the sole lecturer of Ancient History had no real possibility to establish a research team. Later she got to the Department of Auxiliary Sciences in the History Institute of the Szeged University. She has been doing research on the City of Rome (the ancient monuments and development of Rome; published a book on Forum Romanum), and besides publishing studies she restarted the program of the translating all letters of Sidonius into Hungarian. Beside her, just Péter Mayer, presently the Associate Professor the Department of Classical-Philology dealt with Sidonius, wrote his MA-thesis from the letters of Sidonius, but later turned towards Ancient Greek language and literature. Aport from these research, some selected translations and work can be mentioned in the field of research concerning Sidonius in Hungary.         Translations of the works of Sidonius There is not either a critical edition or a scholarly translation, just fragments.
