Currently featuring Marco Onorato’s recent book on Sidonius’ poetic technique, Il castone e la gemma, and Helga Köhler’s first-time German translation of the Correspondence.
Sidonius’ Latin is challenging, his oeuvre has hitherto been little known in the German-speaking world. Historians have used the existing translations into English and French. This first translation of the entire correspondence, and the poems which it includes, into German aims to make a valuable fifth-century author available to a contemporary audience. Translated from the publisher’s blurb; read on there.
Helga Köhler, C. Sollius Apollinaris Sidonius. Die Briefe, Stuttgart 2014
The letters of Sidonius (born 430/2 in Lyons, died after 481) are literary works of art in which an enormous wealth of experiences, observations, and human relationships from its educated, humorous, and sympathetic author finds its expression in words. In more than one respect, they occupy a special position in Latin epistolography. The date of their author alone shows that he was witness to the demise of the Roman empire in the west, and even, on account of his position in society as a member of the senatorial aristocracy in Gaul, someone who was directly involved. [...] Because

The translator distinguishes between letters written in a detached register (she then uses ‘Ihr’ to the addressee) and those in an intimate one (’Du’). These fragments
provide an example of both. The verse inlays are rendered in the original metre, as seen in the third sample.

aims to investigate this sophisticated textual architecture and its fruitful interaction not only with an extreme form of intertextuality, but also with finding and applying rare, contrived words. Read more in the publisher’s catalogue Download the Table of Contents
Sidonius Apollinaris is a manierist poet. One of the most suggestive aspects of his poetry is his tendency to borrow features from the prestigious literary tradition and set them in a new calibrated structure. The elements which he borrows include themes, commonplaces, and lexical niceties. The new structure in which these fit consists of multiple, tightly interrelated levels. The present volume

Here ar a few samples to illustrate the book’s aims and method:
From Part I, chapter 1 ‘Amplificazione e sfaccettatura di topoi’ (pp. 15-16)
